Mexican Train house rules
The short answer: almost every family plays Mexican Train a little differently. The most common house rules are making the double-blank worth 50, a big first turn, starting your own train first, and chicken-foot doubles. It’s a good idea to pick yours before the first round, so everyone’s on the same page.
The rules marked In Loco Motion can be switched on or off in the app under House rules. In games with friends, everyone plays by the host's rules. New to the game? Start with the standard rules.
Double blank is worth 50In Loco Motion
Getting caught holding the double-blank costs 50 points instead of 0.
Big first turnIn Loco Motion
On your first turn of each round, play as many tiles as you can on your own train.
Start your own train firstIn Loco Motion
You must start your own train before you can play on the Mexican Train or anyone else's.
Any play closes your trainIn Loco Motion
Normally only playing on your own train takes your marker off. With this rule, any tile you play removes it.
Draw until you can playIn Loco Motion
Instead of drawing one tile and passing, keep drawing until you get a tile you can play.
Doubles don't blockIn Loco Motion
A double still gets covered, but play can go on elsewhere in the meantime.
Play several doubles in a row
After a double, you may play another double, and another - then cover them in the order they were played.
Chicken foot doubles
A double must get three tiles on it (fanned out like a chicken foot) before anyone plays elsewhere.
Change the starting tile count
Deal more tiles for a longer round or fewer for a quicker one. Just leave a good pile to draw from.
Play a shorter game
Play fewer rounds (for example, stop after the double-6 round). The lowest total still wins.
Say "one left"
You have to tap the table or say "one left" when you're down to one tile. If you forget, you draw two.
Mexican Train waits
The Mexican Train can't be started until everyone has started their own train.
Last tile a double
If you go out on a double, the round only ends once someone covers it.
